Absentia formed in Oviedo, Asturias in 2004 and quickly established themselves as one of the most ambitious and theatrically inclined extreme metal acts in northern Spain. Their sound merges symphonic black metal, melodic death metal, and gothic atmospheres, creating a dramatic and emotionally charged style built on orchestral arrangements, aggressive riffing, and a strong sense of narrative darkness. From the beginning, the band embraced a grandiose approach: sweeping keyboards, layered guitars, and vocals that shift between harsh extremity and melodic expression.
Their first release, the demo The Last Sun (2007), introduced their symphonic foundations and showcased a young band already leaning toward cinematic arrangements and thematic depth. This early material laid the groundwork for their debut full‑length Heaven Still Burns (2009), a record that blended blackened aggression with gothic melancholy and melodic death metal precision. The album received positive attention within the Spanish underground for its balance of orchestral ambition and raw intensity.
With Our Bleeding Sun (2011), Absentia refined their identity further, delivering a more polished and expansive work. The album featured denser orchestration, more dynamic songwriting, and a heightened emotional range, solidifying their reputation as one of Asturias’ most distinctive extreme metal exports. Their participation in the 2012 European Tour Sampler marked a period of increased visibility, helping the band reach audiences beyond Spain.
Throughout their career, Absentia have maintained a consistent thematic focus on darkness, emotional turmoil, death, and the metaphysical aspects of evil. Their music often carries a dramatic, almost operatic tone, supported by the prominent keyboard work of founding member David GarcĂa and the expressive vocal and guitar presence of Julián DĂaz. Despite lineup changes over the years, the band has remained active and continues to evolve under the banner of Malevolence Records.
