Abyss is a melodic black/death metal band from Dorfen, Bavaria, formed in 2009 and active within the German underground with a sound rooted in sharp riffing, chaotic energy, and a distinctly melodic yet aggressive edge. Their music blends Scandinavian‑influenced black metal with death metal weight, often driven by fast tremolo lines, dual‑guitar interplay, and harsh, commanding vocals. The band’s thematic focus on chaos is reflected in their songwriting approach: turbulent structures, shifting tempos, and a raw, unpolished atmosphere that preserves the immediacy of their early recordings.

The project remained largely obscure until 2018, when Abyss released their first two recordings—I and II—both showcasing a sound that balances melodic sensibility with abrasive blackened ferocity. These early works were noted in underground circles for their energetic execution and the band’s ability to merge aggression with memorable guitar work. Despite a previous release being issued through a label later associated with NSBM, the band has explicitly distanced itself from such affiliations.

Abyss continued to expand their presence through collaborative releases, including the Abyss / Besna split (2020) and the Splitsession collaboration (2021), which highlighted their compatibility with other rising acts in the European black/death scene. Their upcoming compilation Compendium Chaoticum (2025) gathers and recontextualizes their material, offering a cohesive portrait of the band’s evolution over more than a decade.

With a lineup anchored by Andrew (lead guitars, vocals), Sebi (rhythm guitars), Lulu (bass), and Pepper (vocals), Abyss continues to operate independently, maintaining a strong DIY ethos and a commitment to the chaotic, melodic violence that defines their sound.
