Al‑Khemia emerged from Salamanca in 2020, founded by Valtiel and Draco with the intention of exploring the more cosmic, mystical, and introspective edges of atmospheric black metal. Their music blends cold, expansive soundscapes with melodic undercurrents and ritualistic ambience, drawing on themes of alchemy, the natural world, and the vastness of the cosmos. The project quickly established itself within the Spanish underground thanks to its evocative atmosphere, layered guitar work, and the interplay between ethereal keyboards and harsh, distant vocals.
Their first release, the EP Phantom Blood (2020), introduced the project’s core aesthetic: icy tremolo lines, drifting synth textures, and a sense of astral melancholy. Later that same year, the full‑length De Profundis ad Astra expanded their sonic palette, offering a more immersive and refined journey. The album balanced raw black metal elements with celestial ambience, reflecting the band’s fascination with the metaphysical and the transformative symbolism of alchemy.
In 2021, Al‑Khemia participated in the split Cold Is the Void, further solidifying their presence in the atmospheric scene. The release showcased a colder, more introspective side of their sound, emphasizing the cosmic emptiness and meditative qualities that define their work. The 2023 single Denial continued this trajectory, presenting a more focused and emotionally charged composition that hinted at future evolution.
The band’s lineup features musicians with experience in various Spanish metal projects, bringing together influences from melodic, symphonic, and atmospheric backgrounds. This collective experience contributes to the project’s layered arrangements and its ability to shift seamlessly between aggression and serenity. Despite remaining independent, Al‑Khemia has cultivated a dedicated following drawn to their blend of mysticism, cosmic imagery, and atmospheric depth.
