Alone in the Mist was an atmospheric black/doom metal project from the Smolensk region, active between 2016 and 2022. The band developed a sound rooted in depressive atmospheres, slow‑burning doom structures, and melodic black metal elements, often centered on themes of emotional collapse, inner torment, and existential decay. Their music combined mournful guitar leads, anguished vocals, and a heavy, suffocating ambience that placed them within the Russian school of depressive and atmospheric black metal.
The project began as the solo vision of Roman Gaak, who handled all instruments and vocals during the early years. His initial compositions were raw, introspective, and heavily influenced by depressive black metal aesthetics. The first single Patience (2017) introduced the project’s bleak emotional tone, while the debut full‑length Thunder of Doom (2018) expanded the sound into a more structured atmospheric doom approach. That same year, Alone in the Mist released two additional full‑lengths—Useless and See Them Dying—marking an unusually prolific period. These albums were noted in underground reviews for their sorrowful melodies, slow pacing, and emotionally crushing atmosphere.
By 2019, the lineup expanded with the addition of bassist Konstantin Mirin, guitarist Arkady Naumenkov, and drummer Evgeny Platonov, shifting Alone in the Mist from a solo project into a full band. This lineup change brought a heavier, more dynamic sound, culminating in the 2020 full‑length In Chains of Torment. The album showcased a more polished production, deeper doom influences, and a stronger interplay between guitars and vocals. The single Rejected by the Sky (2020) and Painful Cognition (2021) continued to refine the project’s emotional intensity, blending depressive black metal with atmospheric doom in a way that resonated with fans of the genre.
Alone in the Mist also appeared on the compilation Jericho Vol.39 – Hatred Towards Myself (2018) with the track “Graveyard of Joys,” further cementing their presence in the depressive black metal underground.
The project quietly dissolved in 2022, leaving behind a dense and emotionally charged discography that reflects the bleakness and introspection characteristic of the Russian atmospheric doom/black metal scene.
