Arathorn is a long‑running atmospheric black/folk metal project from Berlin, founded in 1995 after operating for two years under the earlier name Silentium. Named after the father of Aragorn in Tolkien’s legendarium, the project channels a distinctly medieval, mythic, and heroic atmosphere, weaving together black metal’s rawness with folk‑infused melodies and ancient storytelling. Arathorn’s lyrical world draws heavily from Tolkien, Norse mythology, and the Nibelungenlied, creating a sound rooted in both fantasy and Germanic cultural memory.
Initially active as Silentium, the project transformed into Arathorn in 1995, with Sköll becoming the creative core. Handling guitars, bass, drums, flute, and vocals, Sköll shaped the band’s identity as a solitary, multi‑instrumental endeavor. The early demo In Spectren pulsierender Todesrinnung (1996) introduced a raw, atmospheric style steeped in medieval melancholy and black metal austerity.
This period culminated in the debut full‑length Niemals krönender als was einst war (1997), a cult classic within the German underground. The album blended harsh black metal passages with folk instrumentation and epic, archaic melodies, capturing a sense of ancient grandeur and tragic heroism.
After several years of silence, Arathorn resurfaced with the Promo 2004 demo, signaling a renewed creative spark. This release preserved the project’s medieval atmosphere while adopting a more refined, melodic approach.
The second full‑length, Treue & Verrat (2008), expanded on these foundations with a darker, more dramatic tone. The album explored themes of loyalty, betrayal, and mythic conflict, delivered through sweeping riffs, mournful flute passages, and Sköll’s characteristic vocal style. It stands as a mature continuation of the project’s early vision—epic, atmospheric, and steeped in ancient lore.
Arathorn occupies a unique place in German atmospheric black/folk metal: solitary, myth‑driven, and unwaveringly committed to a medieval aesthetic. The project’s defining traits include:
Though releases have been sparse, Arathorn’s work has earned a lasting cult reputation for its authenticity and its evocative, medieval spirit.
