Arvalastra, founded in Bilbao in 2016, is one of the most singular and alchemically driven projects in the Spanish extreme metal underground. Conceived and executed entirely by the multi‑instrumentalist Dusk, the project stands apart for its unusual instrumentation and its hermetic, ritualistic atmosphere. Unlike most metal bands, Arvalastra is built almost entirely around electric bass, which replaces the traditional role of guitars and becomes the primary vehicle for melody, texture, and heaviness. This distinctive choice gives the music a cavernous, droning, and otherworldly character that has become the project’s signature.
The early work, beginning with the debut full‑length Lunaural (2016), leaned toward death/doom metal—slow, oppressive, and steeped in occult symbolism. As the project evolved, Arvalastra shifted into a more atmospheric black/doom territory, weaving hypnotic bass lines, spectral ambience, and ritualistic rhythms into a sound that feels both ancient and alien. Releases such as Rebirth of His Shattered Majesty (2018) and Doctrines of the Temple of the Moon (2019) expanded the project’s mythic and esoteric universe, exploring alchemical transformation, lunar mysteries, and hermetic philosophy.
The prolific period between 2017 and 2020 saw numerous singles, EPs, and full‑lengths, culminating in The Key to the Shrine of Putrefaction (2020), one of Arvalastra’s most acclaimed works. The album deepened the project’s atmospheric dimension, blending droning bass layers with ritual chants, occult symbolism, and a sense of metaphysical decay. Compilations and splits—such as Sutxakurrak (2019) and Compendium (2020)—further documented the project’s evolution and its expanding conceptual framework.
In the 2020s, Arvalastra continued to refine its hermetic soundworld. Meditation on the Lunar Steppes (2023) embraced a more meditative, cosmic approach, while the Urfaust tribute Unter Töchtern der WĂĽste (2023) revealed the project’s reverence for ritualistic black metal traditions. Recent works like Turba Philosophorum (2024) and the upcoming Labyrinthine Deserts of Hermetic Knowledge (2025) show Arvalastra moving deeper into alchemical mysticism, crafting music that feels like a sonic grimoire—dense, symbolic, and transformative.
Dusk’s involvement in numerous other underground projects (Dishearten, Saguzar, Sepulchral, Sulfurer, Herensuge, and more) reflects his central role in the Basque extreme metal scene. Yet Arvalastra remains his most esoteric and personal creation: a project where sound becomes ritual, bass becomes incantation, and each release feels like a chapter in an ongoing alchemical opus.
