Außerwelt is a post‑black metal band from Münster whose music explores the tension between modern life, emotional vulnerability, and the alienation of contemporary urban existence. Formed in 2011, the band has developed a sound that blends atmospheric black metal with post‑metal expansiveness, weaving melancholic melodies, dynamic crescendos, and introspective lyricism into a cohesive, emotionally charged whole. Their work reflects a distinctly modern sensibility—restless, reflective, and shaped by the pressures and contradictions of life in the present age.
The band was founded by guitarist Meredith Schmiedeskamp, guitarist/vocalist Manuel Klein, bassist Jonathan Ross, drummer Michael Thomas, and vocalist Stefan Seehütter. From the outset, Außerwelt embraced a post‑black metal aesthetic grounded in atmosphere and emotional depth rather than traditional extremity. Their first recordings—the Demo and the EP Our Lives Out of Balance (both 2014)—introduced a sound marked by shimmering guitars, expressive vocals, and themes centered on imbalance, disconnection, and the search for meaning within modern society.
With the arrival of drummer Kris Lucas in 2016, the band’s rhythmic foundation became more dynamic and textured, allowing their compositions to expand in scope. The EP Transitions (2017) captured this evolution, offering a more mature and fluid interplay between post‑metal atmosphere and black metal intensity.
During this period, AuĂźerwelt’s music increasingly reflected the emotional and psychological landscapes of contemporary life—urban pressure, personal fragmentation, and the fragile spaces where dreams and reality intersect. The singles The Obsidian Ascent (2021) and The Panoptical I (2022) further developed these themes, presenting a darker, more introspective sound.
After more than a decade as the band’s voice, Stefan SeehĂĽtter departed in 2022. Guitarist Manuel Klein stepped fully into the vocal role, reshaping the band’s emotional tone while maintaining continuity in their songwriting. This shift marked a new chapter, with the band’s sound becoming more cohesive, atmospheric, and conceptually focused.
The full‑length Breath (2025) represents the culmination of AuĂźerwelt’s artistic evolution. The album explores themes of suffocation and release, the struggle to remain human in an increasingly mechanized world, and the fragile moments of clarity that emerge within chaos. Musically, Breath blends soaring post‑black crescendos with reflective passages, creating a sense of movement between tension and catharsis.
It stands as the band’s most ambitious and emotionally resonant work—an album that captures the essence of their name: the feeling of being outside the world, observing it with both longing and unease.
