Before the Rain is a long‑standing Portuguese atmospheric doom/death metal entity formed in SetĂşbal in 1997, later relocating to London while maintaining its Lusitanian emotional core. Built around the vision of guitarist and composer Valter Cunha, the band emerged from the late‑90s Portuguese underground with a sound steeped in melancholy, slow‑burning heaviness, and the introspective sorrow characteristic of the region’s darker musical lineage. Their work channels themes of love, loss, and grief, drawing from the same well of emotional austerity often associated with fado, but transmuted into a doom/death framework.
After several years of development, the band released the demo …and with the Day Dying Light in 2002, establishing their foundation of mournful melodies, deep growls, and patient, atmospheric pacing. Their debut full‑length …One Day Less (2007) expanded this palette, earning attention for its blend of emotional weight and compositional refinement. By this time, the lineup had solidified around Cunha alongside bassist Pedro Daniel and drummer Joaquim Aires, with various vocalists and guitarists contributing across different eras.
The 2011 album Frail marked a creative peak, receiving strong critical reception for its depth, emotional clarity, and the band’s ability to balance crushing heaviness with fragile, melodic passages. In interviews, Cunha emphasized the difficulty of sustaining a doom/death project in a niche scene, yet also highlighted the band’s commitment to honesty, emotional expression, and slow, deliberate craftsmanship. The album’s reception from both press and fans was notably positive, reinforcing the band’s status as one of Portugal’s most compelling doom exports.
That same year, Before the Rain collaborated with Finnish funeral doom giants Shape of Despair on a split release, further cementing their place within the international doom landscape. Throughout their career, the band has maintained a reputation for introspective songwriting, atmospheric depth, and a steadfast dedication to the emotional gravity that defines doom/death metal. Their work stands as a testament to endurance and artistic sincerity, evolving slowly but purposefully across decades while remaining faithful to the sorrow‑laden essence at their core.
