Berserk are one of the longest‑running and most emblematic pagan black metal bands from central Spain, active since 1998 and rooted deeply in Celtiberian identity, ancestral pride, and anti‑Christian sentiment. Emerging first under the name Abaddon, the band quickly redefined their direction, adopting the Berserk moniker and committing to a raw, militant form of pagan black metal that drew from both Scandinavian influences and Iberian historical themes.

Their early demo Forest of Souls (1998) established the foundation of their sound: cold riffing, warlike rhythms, and lyrics invoking ancient laws, forgotten kingdoms, and the spiritual resistance of pre‑Christian Iberia. The EP Return of the Ancient Laws (1999) further solidified their identity, leading to their breakthrough full‑length …from the Celtiberian Woods (2001), a record that remains a cornerstone of Spanish pagan black metal. It combined primitive aggression with a strong sense of cultural revivalism, positioning Berserk as one of the few Spanish bands explicitly dedicated to Celtiberian pagan heritage.

Their second album, Rites of Supremacy (2003), pushed the band into wider underground visibility, earning compilation appearances and international distribution. A live album, Live from the Woods (2004), captured their raw stage presence. Their last known full‑length, Cries of Blood and Hate (2006), marked the end of their recorded output before the band entered an extended hiatus. Though officially “on hold,” no new material has surfaced since.

Berserk’s lineup has remained anchored by long‑standing members deeply involved in the Castilian extreme metal scene, many of whom share ties through projects like Kult et Morte, Monhell, Pecado Nefando, and others. Their collective history forms a dense network of underground collaboration that shaped the region’s black metal identity in the late 90s and 2000s.

Despite inactivity, Berserk’s legacy persists through their early works, their contribution to Spanish pagan black metal, and their uncompromising dedication to Celtiberian themes.
