Cân Bardd is one of the most evocative and emotionally charged atmospheric folk/black metal projects to emerge from Switzerland in the last decade. Founded in 2016 in Geneva by multi‑instrumentalist Malo Civelli, the project blends sweeping orchestral arrangements, immersive folk textures, and soaring black‑metal intensity into a sound that feels both vast and deeply personal. The name—Cân Bardd, Welsh for “Bard’s Song”—captures the project’s essence: music as myth, memory, and storytelling.
From the beginning, Cân Bardd positioned itself within the lineage of epic atmospheric black metal, drawing inspiration from nature, fantasy, and the emotional landscapes of solitude and wonder. Yet the project’s identity is unmistakably its own, shaped by Civelli’s orchestral sensibility and the dynamic drumming of Dylan Watson, whose precision and expressiveness have been central since the band’s inception.
Their debut single A Gift for Nature (2017) introduced the project’s core aesthetic: lush symphonics, melancholic melodies, and a sense of grandeur rooted in the natural world. This vision fully blossomed on the debut full‑length Nature Stays Silent (2018), a sweeping, cinematic album that quickly earned acclaim for its emotional depth and atmospheric richness.
The follow‑up, The Last Rain (2019), pushed the project further into epic territory, with more intricate arrangements and a heightened sense of narrative flow. Many listeners consider it one of the strongest atmospheric black metal releases of its era, praised for its balance of aggression, beauty, and orchestral scale.
In 2021, Cân Bardd released Devoured by the Oak, a darker, more mature work that deepened the project’s connection to nature‑based myth and introspective storytelling. The album’s dense orchestration and immersive atmosphere solidified the band’s place among the leading voices in modern epic black metal.
While Civelli and Watson remain the creative core, Cân Bardd’s live lineup expanded in 2019 with the addition of Nicolas Bise and Matthieu Favre, both of whom bring experience from Norvhar, Saor (live), Belore (live), and other notable projects. Their presence allows Cân Bardd’s vast studio sound to be translated into powerful, emotionally resonant live performances.
