Cyanotoxin was a short‑lived but remarkably prolific melodic black/heavy metal project from Barcelona, active between 2020 and 2024. Entirely driven by multi‑instrumentalist Danny Soler, the band stood out for its relentless output, releasing demos, EPs, singles, and full‑length albums at a pace rarely seen in the Spanish underground. Cyanotoxin’s sound fused melodic black metal riffing with traditional heavy metal structures, atmospheric touches, and a strong conceptual focus on historical themes—particularly European myth-history, ancient warfare, and legendary narratives.
The project debuted in 2020 with a burst of activity: the single Evropa’s Rhapsody, the demos Runefrost and VĂkingr, and the EPs ĂŤss and Konspiracy…. These early works established Cyanotoxin’s stylistic identity—raw yet melodic, driven by icy tremolo lines, epic heavy‑metal phrasing, and a DIY production aesthetic that emphasized immediacy and atmosphere. The historical and mythological references in these releases reflected Soler’s interest in Northern European sagas and ancient civilizations.
In 2021, the EP Alien Flesh expanded the project’s sonic palette with darker tones and more experimental structures, hinting at the evolution that would define the following years. Cyanotoxin’s first full‑length, Blasphemic Glee (2022), presented a more cohesive and aggressive approach, blending blackened vocals with heavy metal harmonies and a sharpened melodic sensibility. The same year, the band released Nightmares of the Sea, a second full‑length exploring nautical horror, maritime folklore, and mythic seafaring themes.
The momentum continued with Tomb of Ironbeard (2023), a concept album steeped in heroic fantasy and ancient‑warrior imagery. Its songwriting leaned more heavily into epic heavy metal influences while retaining the blackened edge characteristic of the project. In 2024, Cyanotoxin released the single No One by My Side and the full‑length Everlasting Autumn, a melancholic and atmospheric work that would become the project’s final chapter. This last album showcased a more reflective tone, blending melodic black metal with somber heavy‑metal passages and autumnal themes of decay, memory, and solitude.
Despite its brief existence, Cyanotoxin left behind an extensive and varied discography, unified by Danny Soler’s singular creative vision. The project’s rapid evolution, thematic ambition, and prolific output have earned it a small but dedicated following within the Spanish underground, marking it as one of the more intriguing one‑man endeavors of the early 2020s.
