Cyhiriaeth was a pagan black metal band from Torrelodones (Madrid), active during the early 2000s and regarded as one of the key names in the Iberian pagan black metal underground. Their music drew heavily from ancient Iberian spirituality, heathen traditions, and the natural landscapes of the peninsula, combining raw black metal aggression with folk instrumentation such as bagpipes and flutes. The band’s logo was created by Christophe Szpajdel, further cementing their place within the classic European black metal aesthetic.
The project emerged in 2000 with the demo Following the Wind’s Path, a raw and atmospheric introduction to their pagan vision. This was followed by Into the Nemeton (2001), which expanded their ritualistic and nature‑oriented themes, referencing sacred groves and pre‑Christian Iberian spirituality. Their 2003 demo Iberian Heathen Chants became one of their most circulated early works, praised for its evocative melodies and its integration of traditional instruments into a harsh black metal framework.
In 2006, Cyhiriaeth released The Aeon of the Purifying Fire, a demo that marked a shift toward a more aggressive and warlike sound. That same year, they issued their only full‑length album, Lands of the Ancient Cult, through Blood Fire Death Productions. The album is widely considered their definitive statement: a fierce, atmospheric, and deeply pagan work that blended tremolo‑driven black metal with folk passages, ritualistic chants, and lyrical themes rooted in Iberian ancestral identity. It remains a cult release within the Spanish pagan black metal scene.
The compilation Warchants from the Woods (2006) gathered earlier material and marked the last known activity of the band. Cyhiriaeth’s lineup featured musicians who were active in numerous other Spanish underground acts, contributing to a dynamic but shifting roster. Their use of bagpipes, flutes, and heathen imagery placed them firmly within the pagan black metal tradition, while their focus on Iberian heritage distinguished them from their Northern European counterparts.
Although their existence was relatively brief, Cyhiriaeth left a lasting imprint on the Spanish pagan black metal landscape, remembered for their dedication to ancestral Iberian themes and their raw, evocative sound.
