Czarnobog was founded in 2012 in Hesse by the prolific underground musician Wehrgoat, whose extensive body of work across projects like Blackest, Moorgeist, Necro Forest, Ruins of Unlight, Weligor, and Winterfullmoon has made him a defining figure in the German raw and atmospheric black metal underground. From the beginning, Czarnobog embraced a deeply nostalgic, pagan‑infused aesthetic—music steeped in forest mysticism, ancient melancholy, and the cold, windswept solitude of the Germanic and Slavic borderlands. The project’s sound blended raw atmospheric black metal with pagan melodies, lo‑fi ambience, and a strong narrative sense rooted in myth, folklore, and ancestral memory.

The debut demo and self‑titled full‑length Czarnobog (both 2012) established the project’s core identity: distant, frostbitten riffs; mournful, reverb‑drenched vocals; and a production style that emphasized atmosphere over clarity. These early works resonated with listeners drawn to the raw, unfiltered spirit of 90s black metal, yet carried a distinctly personal emotional weight. The rapid succession of releases in 2013—The Saga of Czarnobog and Forgotten Heroes—expanded the project’s mythic scope, weaving tales of ancient warriors, forgotten spirits, and the sorrow of lost ages.

With Forn anda náttĂşrunnar (2015), Czarnobog reached a new level of atmospheric depth. The album blended pagan black metal with a more immersive, nature‑bound ambience, evoking windswept forests, moonlit rituals, and the quiet presence of ancestral spirits. This period also saw multiple splits—Summoning the Hessian Darkness, Schattengeflecht—which strengthened the project’s ties to the German and international underground. Wehrgoat’s ability to produce vast amounts of material without sacrificing thematic cohesion became one of the project’s defining traits.

The mid‑to‑late 2010s marked Czarnobog’s most prolific era. Eastern Barbarian Cult and Of Mordovian Occult Blackness (both 2017) explored Slavic mysticism and regional pagan traditions, while Nightfall over Northern Ural & Unholy Spells (2019) expanded the project’s geographical and mythological reach. The live album Live at Falkenhardt – 2018 captured the project’s rare foray into performance, offering a raw document of its ritualistic presence.

From 2020 onward, Czarnobog entered a phase of darker, more introspective releases. Sigils of War… (2020), Forsaken Spells… (2020), and Night of Uralic Storm (2021) showcased a harsher, more occult‑driven sound, while still retaining the project’s signature melancholy. Numerous splits—Fear of Tartarus / Remembrance of the Blood Moon, Nachtvrucht / Czarnobog, Into the Sarmatian Forest, and MMXXII Occulta—demonstrated Wehrgoat’s collaborative spirit and his deep integration into the European pagan black metal network.

By the time the project dissolved in 2023, Czarnobog had produced one of the most extensive and thematically cohesive discographies in the German pagan/atmospheric black metal underground. Its legacy lies in its unwavering dedication to raw emotion, ancestral memory, and the mystical landscapes of both Germanic and Slavic tradition. For many listeners, Czarnobog remains a symbol of the underground’s enduring ability to create worlds—vast, sorrowful, and timeless—through sound alone.
