Dantalion is one of Galicia’s longest‑running and most respected extreme metal bands, evolving over two decades from depressive black metal roots into a broader, more melodic death/doom‑infused expression of sorrow, decay, and existential collapse. Formed in Vigo in 2004, the band quickly became known for their bleak atmosphere, anguished vocal delivery, and a lyrical focus on death, depression, and the psychological void. Their logo, created by Christophe Szpajdel, situates them firmly within the classic European black metal lineage.

The band’s early years were defined by raw, depressive black metal, beginning with Promo 2005 and culminating in their debut full‑length When the Ravens Fly over Me (2006). This first era established Dantalion’s signature: mournful tremolo riffs, mid‑tempo despair, and a suffocating emotional weight. Their sophomore album, Call of the Broken Souls (2007), refined this formula with stronger songwriting and a deeper sense of melancholy.

With All Roads Lead to Death (2010) and Return to Deep Lethargy (2012), Dantalion began incorporating melodic death/doom elements—heavier rhythms, more expansive structures, and a broader emotional palette—without abandoning their blackened core. These albums marked a transitional period, expanding the band’s sonic identity and earning them recognition beyond the Spanish underground.

The compilation The Ravens Fly Again: 10 Years of Desolation (2014) celebrated their first decade, followed by Where Fear Is Born (2014), a return to darker, more aggressive black metal textures. The mid‑2010s saw a resurgence of intensity with …and All Will Be Ashes (2016) and The Seventh Wandering Soul (2018), both praised for their balance of atmosphere, aggression, and emotional depth.

In the 2020s, Dantalion entered a new creative phase. Time to Pass Away (2021) delivered a mature, cohesive blend of black metal ferocity and doom‑laden melancholy, supported by singles like Time to Close the Circle and Gate to an Eternal Doom. Their 2023 album Fatum further solidified this direction, offering a dense, sorrow‑filled work that stands among their strongest releases. The band continued releasing singles such as Novena Wake Begins and Sounds of Bells and Open Scissors (2023), maintaining a steady creative output.

Throughout their history, Dantalion has been anchored by the core duo of drummer Naemoth and guitarist Netzja, whose collaboration has shaped the band’s evolving sound. Vocalist/guitarist Sanguinist—active in multiple periods—brought a tortured, expressive vocal presence that became central to the band’s identity. A rotating cast of bassists and vocalists contributed to different eras, while the band’s connection to the Galician extreme metal scene (including members of Witchfyre, Endemic, Arkham, and others) enriched their musical lineage.

Dantalion remains a pillar of Spanish extreme metal: consistent, emotionally devastating, and committed to exploring the darkest corners of human experience.
