Dark Cinder was a short‑lived raw pagan black metal project from the Basque Country, active between 2019 and 2020. Despite its brief existence, the project carved out a distinct niche within the Iberian underground through its lo‑fi aesthetic, solitary atmosphere, and thematic devotion to Basque paganism and nocturnal mysticism. The music embraced the abrasive, unpolished edge of raw black metal—icy riffs, cavernous vocals, and minimalist percussion—while channeling a sense of isolation and ancestral darkness tied to the Basque landscape.
The debut EP Akelarre beltzaren sugarra (2019) introduced Dark Cinder’s sonic identity: harsh, spectral black metal steeped in themes of witchcraft, death, and rural desolation. Its title—“the flame of the black akelarre”—evoked the region’s mythic gatherings and occult folklore. The follow‑up EP Mamu banpirikoen gaztelu beltza (2020) (“the black castle of vampire ghosts”) expanded the project’s atmospheric dimension, leaning further into spectral imagery and nocturnal dread while maintaining the raw, primitive production that defined the project.
Dark Cinder was driven primarily by A.U., a prolific multi‑instrumentalist active in numerous underground projects across black metal, dungeon synth, raw punk, and depressive metal. His involvement ensured a consistent aesthetic: solitary, uncompromising, and deeply rooted in personal expression. Lyricists J.M. and Zeruzaindari contributed to the project’s final phase, enriching its thematic focus on Basque paganism, death, and the metaphysical solitude of the mountains and forests.
Although the project dissolved in 2020, Dark Cinder remains a small but evocative entry in the Basque raw black metal lineage—an expression of regional pagan identity filtered through lo‑fi extremity and the introspective bleakness characteristic of A.U.’s wider body of work.
