Datura Stramonium was a symphonic black metal project from O Grove (Galicia), active in the early 2010s and centered entirely around the work of multi‑instrumentalist Anxo Gaavriel. The project combined the harshness of black metal with atmospheric and orchestral elements, creating a dramatic, keyboard‑driven sound rooted in melancholy, tension, and dark emotional landscapes. Although information about the band is scarce, their releases reflect a strong DIY ethos and a distinctly Galician approach to symphonic extremity.
Their debut full‑length, Unha chamada de auxilio (2012), stands as the project’s most substantial work. Its title—“A call for help”—captures the emotional tone of the album: bleak, introspective, and steeped in the cold, windswept atmosphere characteristic of Galician black metal. The record blended raw guitar work with prominent symphonic layers, giving it a dramatic and sorrowful edge.
Five years later, Datura Stramonium returned with the EP Medo (2017), a shorter but more focused release that continued exploring themes of fear, inner turmoil, and darkness. The EP showcased a more refined production and a stronger emphasis on orchestral arrangements, suggesting an evolution in Gaavriel’s compositional approach.
After Medo, the project’s activity became unclear, and no further releases or updates have been documented. As a result, Datura Stramonium remains a small but intriguing entry in the Galician black metal underground—an atmospheric, solitary project defined by its symphonic ambition and emotional intensity.
