Dead Wasteland is a one‑man project from Tomsk, founded in 2020 and notable for its dramatic stylistic evolution. What began as a raw, experimental death metal endeavor quickly transformed into a prolific ambient/atmospheric black metal project centered on instrumental storytelling, nature‑driven moods, and cinematic soundscapes.
The project’s early phase in 2020 was marked by a rapid series of singles—The Invasion, The Apocalypse, Minotaur, The Mystery of the Forest, and many others—culminating in two full‑lengths (The Greatness of Nature and Voyage) and the Nostalgia EP. Even in these early works, the shift toward atmospheric and nature‑focused composition was already visible.
By 2021, Dead Wasteland had fully embraced ambient and atmospheric black metal, releasing EPs such as The Magic of Nature, Mythology, and Nature Lover, alongside the full‑length Wonderful Nature. These works established the project’s signature: instrumental black metal infused with ambient textures, pastoral melancholy, and a strong sense of narrative movement.
The years 2022–2023 saw continued experimentation, including brief returns to death metal with Short Death Metal Demo, Full Death Metal Demo, and the Death Metal Demos compilation. Yet the project’s core identity remained rooted in atmospheric, nature‑oriented soundscapes.
Dead Wasteland briefly ceased activity in October 2023 but was revived later the same year, continuing with new singles and EPs that expanded its cosmic and northern themes. Releases such as Leviathan, Universe, Landscapes of the North, and Forest (2024) show a project still evolving, still prolific, and still committed to instrumental storytelling through atmospheric black metal.
