Depicting Abysm was an atmospheric black metal duo from Saint Petersburg, active between 2012 and 2018, known for its deeply melancholic sound, introspective themes, and immersive, sorrow‑laden atmospheres. Emerging from the same creative circle that produced projects like Epitimia and Mute Ocean, the band crafted a style rooted in depressive black metal, ambient textures, and post‑black metal sensibilities. Their music often explored themes of death, memory, emotional decay, and the quiet collapse of the self, delivered through a blend of raw expression and carefully sculpted ambience.

The band debuted in 2013 with the split Silentium!, a release that immediately positioned them within the Russian atmospheric underground. Their contribution was noted for its emotional weight and its ability to merge bleak black metal with reflective, almost meditative passages. That same year, Depicting Abysm released their first full‑length, Immersion, through Naturmacht Productions. The album received positive attention for its layered guitar work, mournful melodies, and the interplay between harsh vocals and atmospheric instrumentation. Reviewers often highlighted its ability to evoke a sense of drowning in memory and sorrow, with long, flowing compositions that blurred the line between black metal and ambient soundscapes.

In 2014, the single Ocalić od zapomnienia (“To Save from Oblivion”) appeared, offering a more focused and emotionally direct piece that hinted at the band’s evolving direction. This was followed by their second full‑length, Passage (2016), widely regarded as their most accomplished work. The album expanded their sonic palette with richer textures, deeper emotional resonance, and a more cohesive narrative flow. Critics praised its balance of depressive black metal intensity and atmospheric subtlety, noting its ability to convey themes of loss, existential fatigue, and the fragile boundary between life and oblivion.

Depicting Abysm’s music was shaped primarily by A., who handled all instruments and programming, while K. provided vocals. Their collaboration created a distinctive emotional landscape—cold yet intimate, bleak yet strangely beautiful. The band’s work often resonated with listeners drawn to the more introspective and sorrowful side of atmospheric black metal.

After 2016, the project gradually fell silent, eventually dissolving in 2018. A posthumous appearance came in 2019 with the track “Gathering” on the compilation Jericho Vol.46 – Blood on Snow, serving as a final echo of the band’s atmospheric legacy.

Though their discography is concise, Depicting Abysm remains a respected name within the Russian atmospheric black metal scene, remembered for their emotional depth, evocative soundscapes, and the quiet, mournful beauty that defined their work.
