Disheartened was a short‑lived atmospheric black metal project from Svobodny, active during the early 2010s and centered entirely around the work of multi‑instrumentalist Alexey Shichenko. Although the project remained obscure and released only a small amount of material, it developed a distinct identity within the Russian underground through its instrumental approach and its focus on mood‑driven, melancholic soundscapes.

The project first appeared in 2013 with a self‑titled demo, a raw but evocative recording that introduced Disheartened’s atmospheric direction. Unlike many contemporaries in the Russian scene, the project leaned heavily toward instrumental composition, using guitar layering, ambient textures, and minimalistic structures to evoke feelings of solitude, introspection, and emotional desolation. The absence of vocals became a defining trait, allowing the music’s melodic phrasing and atmospheric weight to carry the emotional narrative.

In 2015, Disheartened released its final work, the EP The End. This recording represented a refinement of the project’s sound—more cohesive, more expressive, and more deeply rooted in atmospheric melancholy. The EP’s title proved prophetic, as the project dissolved shortly after its release. Despite its brevity, The End resonated with listeners who appreciated its quiet, introspective tone and its ability to convey emotion without relying on traditional black metal aggression.

Alexey Shichenko later became known for his work in Mice Eat the Moon, a project that continued exploring atmospheric and melodic territories, suggesting that Disheartened served as an early creative foundation for his later musical development.

Though its discography is minimal and its existence brief, Disheartened remains a small but memorable presence within the Russian atmospheric black metal underground—an example of how minimalism and instrumental storytelling can carve out a unique emotional space even within a genre defined by intensity.
