Duthaig is one of the most evocative and myth‑rooted atmospheric black metal projects to emerge from Switzerland in recent years. Founded in Lausanne in 2019, the band draws deeply from Celtic history, Welsh and Irish myth cycles, and the raw spirituality of nature. Their sound blends mist‑shrouded ambience, melodic tremolo layers, and ritualistic vocal textures, creating an atmosphere that feels ancient, windswept, and mournfully triumphant.
Their debut demo Harlech’s Sleep / Cyhyraeth (2020) immediately established Duthaig’s identity: a fusion of Celtic melancholy and black‑metal ferocity. The 2022 singles Teeth of the Earth and Cyhyraeth expanded this palette, weaving in more dynamic arrangements and a stronger sense of mythic storytelling.
In 2023, Duthaig released their first full‑length album Hiraeth, a work steeped in longing, ancestral memory, and the emotional landscapes of Celtic tradition. The album’s title—Hiraeth, a Welsh word describing a deep, nostalgic yearning—perfectly encapsulates the band’s sonic and thematic core. Flowing Downward’s involvement as their label further situates Duthaig within the lineage of atmospheric black metal that emphasizes emotional depth, natural mysticism, and immersive soundscapes.
The band’s lineup brings together musicians with extensive roots in the Swiss and international underground. Guitarist Grant Hailey and vocalist/keyboardist AsCl3 form the creative nucleus, both also active in projects like 3 Days of Silence and Diablerets. Their collaboration shapes Duthaig’s blend of atmospheric density and Celtic melodic sensibility. Bassist‑turned‑guitarist Rayan Tengblad, bassist S3th, and drummer OP complete the current formation, each contributing experience from notable acts such as Saor (live), BrĂ©vine, Mordor, and The Abyss Order.
Duthaig’s music stands at the crossroads of myth and memory—an atmospheric black metal journey through Celtic landscapes, ancient spirits, and the quiet ache of forgotten worlds.
