Ealain is a Folk/Heavy Metal band from Bilbao, founded on December 3, 2021, by Aitor Mardaraz, Diego Jaén, and Josean Cruces. Conceived as a project blending heavy metal with Celtic‑inspired melodies and maritime storytelling, the band quickly distinguished itself within the Basque underground scene. Although the initial lineup included a bassist and drummer who departed before the first live appearance, Ealain stabilized in early 2022 and debuted on stage in April of the same year.
Their sound merges traditional heavy metal riffing with flutes, folk instrumentation, and narrative lyrics rooted in pirate tales, nautical legends, and fantastical voyages. Early comparisons linked them to Spanish folk metal giants such as Mägo de Oz and Saurom, as well as to European folk metal acts known for melodic arrangements and mythic atmospheres.
The band’s first full‑length, “CorazĂłn de mar” (2022), introduced a conceptual story centered on maritime tragedy, lost kingdoms, and the emotional journey of its protagonist. The album received positive attention in local metal circles for its melodic strength, youthful energy, and the interplay between heavy guitars and folk passages. The singles released that same year helped solidify their identity and expand their audience.
By 2024, Ealain showcased a marked evolution with “Leyenda inmortal”, a more ambitious and mature work featuring denser arrangements, improved production, and a broader emotional range. The album incorporated more dramatic structures, refined orchestration, and guest appearances from notable musicians within the Spanish folk metal scene, reinforcing the band’s growing reputation. Critics highlighted the album’s stronger cohesion, more confident vocal delivery, and the band’s ability to balance festive folk elements with epic, heavy atmospheres.
Throughout their active years, Ealain performed across the Basque Country and surrounding regions, participating in festivals, local events, and club shows. Their concerts were noted for their enthusiasm, theatricality, and the dynamic presence of flutes and folk instrumentation on stage. Despite their rising trajectory, the band entered an on‑hold status in 2024, leaving behind two albums, several singles, and a promising legacy within the new wave of Iberian folk metal.
