Echo of Emptiness is an atmospheric black metal project from Yekaterinburg, originally founded in 2008 under the Russian name Эхо Пустоты (“Echo of the Void”). Emerging from the Siberian depressive and atmospheric black metal underground, the band quickly developed a sound rooted in bleak ambience, sorrow‑laden melodies, and a distinctly introspective approach to black metal. Their early demos circulated in the Russian underground, establishing the project as a raw yet emotionally evocative presence.
The first demo, Эхо пустоты (2009), introduced the band’s foundation: cold tremolo riffs, distant screams, and a suffocating atmosphere that leaned heavily toward depressive black metal. This was followed by Чёрные темницы безумия (2010), a darker and more chaotic recording that expanded the project’s emotional palette with themes of madness, isolation, and inner collapse. These early works captured the raw, unfiltered spirit of the Russian DSBM movement, marked by lo‑fi production and an emphasis on emotional authenticity.
After adopting the English name Echo of Emptiness in 2011, the band released the demo Alone… (2012), a transitional work that refined their atmospheric direction and introduced more melodic, melancholic guitar lines. This evolution culminated in 2013 with the full‑length Anguish, a release that solidified the band’s reputation for crafting immersive, sorrow‑filled soundscapes. The album blended depressive black metal intensity with atmospheric layering, creating a sense of emotional suffocation and existential despair.
Later that same year, the band released Lost Truth, a single that showcased a more melodic and reflective side, followed by the full‑length Silence. Silence is often regarded as one of their strongest works, praised for its balance of raw black metal aggression and haunting atmospheric passages. Its emotional weight and cohesive songwriting earned it recognition within underground circles, with reviewers highlighting its ability to evoke solitude, grief, and spiritual emptiness.
Echo of Emptiness also appeared on the split Escort by Sadness (2013), further embedding the project within the depressive and atmospheric black metal community. Their track “Alone” was later included on Depressive Illusions Records Sampler #5 (2014), expanding their reach to a broader audience of fans of bleak, introspective black metal.
The band’s creative core consists of Immortalis, who handles guitars, vocals, and lyrics, shaping the project’s emotional and atmospheric identity. His work in related projects such as Nidrakk and Глухое Сомнение reflects a consistent dedication to melancholic and atmospheric expression. Bass duties are handled by Smoke, whose presence contributes to the project’s fuller, more grounded sound. Early member Ferus contributed guitars during the formative years (2008–2009), helping establish the raw foundation upon which the band later built.
Echo of Emptiness remains active under Depressive Illusions Records, continuing to represent the bleak, introspective side of Russian atmospheric black metal. Their discography stands as a document of emotional collapse, solitude, and the haunting beauty found within emptiness.
