Encomium was a short‑lived but respected black metal act from Baden‑Württemberg, active between 1998 and 2002. Emerging during a fertile period for the German underground, the band embraced a raw, uncompromising style rooted in the second‑wave tradition—cold riffing, harsh vocals, and a stark, unpolished aesthetic that aligned them with the darker, more misanthropic edge of the scene. Their music carried a sense of ritualistic intensity, driven by minimalistic structures and an atmosphere of bleakness that resonated strongly with followers of the early German black metal movement.

Their debut demo Noctifer (1998) introduced this raw approach, marked by primitive production and a focus on icy guitar lines. The follow‑up Funero Aeternitas (1999) is often regarded as their strongest work, praised for its sharper songwriting and deeper immersion into grim, oppressive atmospheres. The band’s contribution to the split Under an Endarkened Skie (2000) further solidified their presence in the underground, showcasing a harsher and more aggressive direction.

Encomium continued to refine their sound with Nails (2001) and A New Empire Arises (2002), both maintaining their raw ethos while exploring slightly more structured compositions. Despite their growing reputation, the original lineup disbanded in 2002. Due to label delays, their final release—the split with Graupel—did not appear until 2004, by which time the band had already ceased activity. Their track “To Burn the Temple of Moral” also appeared on the compilation D.S.T. (Deutsche schwarzmetallische Tonkunst), placing them among notable contemporaries of the era.

Though their discography is small, Encomium remains a cult name within the German black metal underground, remembered for their uncompromising rawness and their association with the early Sombre Records circle.
