Frostfog was a short‑lived but intriguing Atmospheric/Symphonic Black Metal duo from the Basque Country, active during the second half of the 1990s. Though they never released an official studio album during their original lifespan, the band crafted a raw, keyboard‑driven form of atmospheric black metal that foreshadowed the later work of its members—especially within the Basque and Spanish dungeon synth and atmospheric BM underground.
Their sound leaned heavily on cold, primitive black metal riffing layered with melancholic synths, evoking forests, fog, and Basque mythic imagery. The project remained obscure for decades until the rehearsal material recorded in 1997 resurfaced and was released as the demo “Rehearsals 1997” in 2020, offering a rare glimpse into their early atmospheric vision.
Frostfog’s legacy is largely tied to the later careers of its members, particularly Eöl, who went on to form Elffor, one of Spain’s most influential atmospheric/dungeon synth projects, and also contributed to the legendary Basque black metal band Numen. Frostfog can be seen as an embryonic stage in that creative lineage.
