Frostlagte Måne is an atmospheric black metal band from Moscow, active since 2009 and known for its cold, melancholic sound rooted in themes of depression, hatred, and the stark beauty of nature. The project embraces a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic—reflected even in its Norwegian‑language titles—while channeling the emotional bleakness and raw solitude characteristic of the Russian underground. Over the years, Frostlagte Måne has developed a reputation for crafting immersive, frostbitten soundscapes built on hypnotic tremolo riffs, icy keyboards, and anguished vocal delivery.
The band’s earliest material appeared in 2009 with the demo Inn kaldt Måneskinn, a raw and atmospheric recording that established their foundational style: lo‑fi production, mournful melodies, and a strong emphasis on cold, desolate ambience. A second demo, Inn kaldt måneskinn (2010), and the live demo Fuck the Commerce (2011) circulated in underground circles, helping the band gain a foothold within the atmospheric black metal scene.
Their first full‑length, Søvn av ufruktbar skog (2012), expanded their sonic palette with deeper layering, more expressive guitar work, and a stronger integration of keyboards. The album’s title—“Sleep of the Barren Forest”—captured the project’s core aesthetic: a fusion of natural mysticism and emotional decay. In 2014, Frostlagte Måne released Summoning Blizzard, a colder and more aggressive work that leaned further into winter‑themed atmospheres and harsh, blizzard‑like textures.
After several years of relative quiet, the band returned in 2021 with a major conceptual undertaking: the two‑part album I Solnedgangs Embrace.
These albums marked a significant evolution in Frostlagte Måne’s sound, showcasing more refined production, richer arrangements, and a deeper emotional resonance. Their track “Shadows” was also featured on the Atmospheric Black Metal Compilation 2021, bringing the band to a wider audience.
Frostlagte Måne’s lineup has shifted frequently, with numerous musicians contributing over the years. Despite these changes, the band’s core identity has remained anchored by Ugyldigråter (CXVIII), whose vocals and guitar work define the project’s emotional and atmospheric direction. The addition of keyboardist Sønnavtårnd (XXXIII) in 2013 and guitarist Forvrengtånd (XCI) in 2015 helped shape the band’s more expansive later sound, while bassist Vїividh‑du‑Luøm (DCXXXI) joined in 2021 to complete the current lineup.
With its blend of depressive emotion, natural mysticism, and cold atmospheric immersion, Frostlagte Måne stands as a distinctive presence within Russian atmospheric black metal—an enduring project that continues to explore the darker edges of human experience through the lens of winter and solitude.
