Funerarium emerged in 2003 from the ashes of Uther Pendragon, a raw and primitive black metal project active in Luxembourg’s underground at the turn of the millennium. With the name change came a darker, more focused identity, centered around a cold, orthodox black metal aesthetic rooted in the second‑wave tradition. The band’s core was built around De Rais, who handled vocals, bass and rhythm guitars, and Necroshadow on drums—two musicians deeply embedded in Luxembourg’s extreme metal network, with ties to projects such as Eisheth Zenunim, Donkelheet, Graaweskeelt and Missa Pro Defunctis.
Funerarium’s early years were marked by rehearsal‑room intensity and a deliberately unpolished approach. Their first official release, Demo 2005, captured this rawness: harsh, mid‑tempo black metal steeped in traditional riffing, necro production and an atmosphere of ritualistic hostility. The demo circulated in the underground and received modest but positive attention for its authenticity and adherence to the genre’s grim fundamentals.
The band’s only full‑length, Nocthule (2008), released through Undercover Records, represented their most complete artistic statement. The album delivered a harsher, more aggressive sound, with sharper guitar work, colder atmospheres and a more commanding vocal presence from De Rais. While still rooted in traditional black metal, Nocthule displayed a more structured and deliberate songwriting approach, balancing blasting sections with slower, oppressive passages. Reviews from underground zines often highlighted the album’s dedication to purity of form—eschewing experimentation in favor of a strict, uncompromising black metal ethos.
Despite the strength of Nocthule, Funerarium remained a cult entity, performing rarely and maintaining a low profile. Lineup instability, particularly in the early years, contributed to the band’s sporadic activity. By the late 2000s, the project had effectively dissolved, with its members focusing on other acts within the Luxembourgish and German underground scenes. Funerarium ultimately stands as a small but notable chapter in the region’s extreme metal history: a band committed to the raw, satanic and hostile spirit of black metal, leaving behind a concise but potent discography.
