Galar formed in Bergen in 2004, shaping a distinctive fusion of melodic black metal and Nordic folk elements rooted in the sagas, battles, and historical memory of Norway. From the outset, the project centered on the interplay between harsh vocals, sweeping melodies, and the rich tonal palette of traditional instruments, creating a sound that evokes both the grandeur and the tragedy of the old Norse world. Their self‑titled demo in 2005 introduced this vision with a raw but ambitious approach, soon refined on Skogskvad (2006), where the band established their hallmark blend of symphonic depth, folk instrumentation, and black‑metal intensity.

With Til alle heimsens endar in 2010, Galar expanded their historical focus into a more narrative and dramatic form, crafting songs that moved between ferocity and mournful beauty while exploring themes of conflict, fate, and cultural identity. Their 2015 album De gjenlevende pushed this synthesis further, weaving complex arrangements and choral passages into a work steeped in the emotional weight of survival and remembrance. Throughout their career, Galar have remained an active and evolving presence within Norwegian metal, distinguished by their commitment to historical storytelling, melodic sophistication, and the atmospheric resonance of their regional heritage.
