Geïst was founded in 2005 by Alboin, Cypher D. Rex, Marlek, and Thalos after their departure from Eismalsott. Their original intention was to continue the atmospheric, spiritually charged black metal direction they had begun exploring in their previous band. The debut album Patina (2005) was in fact originally written as Eismalsott’s debut, with Ainvar (Eismalsott) contributing to the recording.

Musically, Geïst combined sharp, melodic black metal riffing with a strong sense of cold atmosphere and introspective lyricism. Their work was marked by a focus on solitude, metaphysical reflection, and a maritime aesthetic that would later become a defining trait of their identity.

In March 2010, the band was forced to change their name to Eïs after receiving legal threats from a Cologne‑based alternative rock band also named Geist. Under the new name, the band continued to evolve, eventually becoming one of Germany’s most respected atmospheric black metal acts. After a hiatus, Eïs resumed activity again in 2021.

Geïst’s legacy lives on entirely through Eïs, but their early releases remain essential documents of mid‑2000s German black metal—icy, melodic, and spiritually charged.
