Hulder began in Storsteinnes in 2006 as a melodic and symphonic black metal project shaped by the myths, landscapes, and cultural memory of Northern Norway. From the outset, the band embraced a style built on sweeping keyboards, sharp melodic riffing, and a strong narrative sense rooted in Viking lore and regional folklore. Their music carried a distinctly northern character—cold, dramatic, and steeped in the tension between beauty and ferocity.

The project’s name draws from the hulder of Scandinavian folklore, an alluring forest spirit whose concealed deformity symbolizes the duality between surface enchantment and hidden danger. This mythic resonance informed the band’s aesthetic and thematic direction, giving their work a sense of ancient mystery and storytelling depth. Their sole recorded release, the Hulder demo from 2012, captured this vision in raw form, blending symphonic elements with a melodic black metal foundation that reflected both the grandeur and the harshness of the far north.

Though their output remained limited, Hulder carved out a small but distinct place within the Norwegian underground, channeling regional myth and melodic intensity into a sound that echoed the spirit of the north.

A Huldre or Hulder is an elf in Scandinavian fairy-tales, they are extremely-good looking humanoids endowed with an animal tail. However, they constantly try to hide a gaping hole of flesh that is situated on their back and would kill any human who'd get a glimpse of it.
