Hypocras was a Geneva‑based folk metal band active throughout the 2000s and 2010s, known for blending aggressive melodic death/black metal foundations with prominent flute arrangements and a distinctly Swiss folk character. Formed in 2005, the band quickly became a recognizable name within the Swiss underground thanks to their energetic live performances and their ability to merge traditional melodies with modern metal intensity.

Their first official release, the Burning Drakkar EP (2010), introduced their signature sound: fast, riff‑driven compositions enriched by Arnaud’s flute lines, which added a triumphant, archaic atmosphere reminiscent of Celtic and Alpine folk traditions. The EP received positive attention from local scenes and helped establish Hypocras as a promising act within European folk metal.

The band reached their creative peak with the full‑length The Seed of Wrath (2013), a record praised for its tight musicianship, dynamic songwriting, and the balance between harsh vocals, melodic guitar work, and folk instrumentation. Underground reviewers highlighted the album’s ability to avoid the clichĂ©s of the genre, opting instead for a darker, more battle‑driven tone. The production showcased a heavier, more mature sound, with the flute integrated as a central melodic force rather than a decorative element.

Their final known release, the Implosive EP (2016), marked the last chapter of the band’s activity. By this time, lineup changes and members’ involvement in other projects—such as Dyssebeia, Stortregn, and Voice of Ruin—contributed to the group’s gradual dissolution. Despite splitting up, Hypocras left behind a small but respected discography that continues to circulate among fans of European folk metal.

The band’s legacy is tied to their ability to merge ferocity and folk authenticity, creating a sound that was both celebratory and warlike, rooted in tradition yet unmistakably modern. Their music remains a testament to the vibrancy of the Swiss folk metal scene during the 2010s.
