Ilbeltz

Ilbeltz is a folk/pagan black metal project from Donostia‑San Sebastián, formed in 1995 and deeply rooted in Basque heritage, maritime history, and ancestral mythology. Often described as “Basque Metal,” the project blends raw black‑metal foundations with traditional instruments, historical narratives, and a strong sense of regional identity. Ilbeltz’s music is atmospheric, ritualistic, and steeped in the imagery of seafaring, ancient Vasconia, and the cultural memory of the Basque coast.

The project remained largely underground for many years, first appearing on the split “Triarchy of Vasconia” (2000), a key document of early Basque pagan black metal. A decade later, Ilbeltz released its monumental full‑length “Auskan gabiltz olatun gainian (1598 Potrobizargorri I)” (2010), an ambitious work combining black metal with chromatic accordion, baroque flute, and folk melodies. The final known release is the 2011 split “D’Anjou en Vasconie – La très grande chasse d’Hellequin,” after which the project’s activity became uncertain.

Ilbeltz is primarily the vision of multi‑instrumentalist Ibai Mendinueta, whose work also connects to the Basque pagan black metal collective Aiumeen Basoa.
