Iria Flavia formed in 1998 in O Barco de Valdeorras, Galicia, emerging during a period when Spanish folkâinfused heavy metal was gaining momentum. Their sound blends melodic power metal with distinctly Galician folk elements, drawing on regional traditions, lyrical storytelling, and a strong sense of local identity. The band’s early years were marked by experimentation with keyboards, flutes, and bagpipes, integrating these instruments into a metal framework that emphasized uplifting melodies and a warm, pastoral atmosphere.
Their debut fullâlength, Tiempos de magia (2002), became their defining early statement. The album showcased bright guitar harmonies, folkâdriven arrangements, and a melodic sensibility rooted in both classic power metal and the cultural heritage of Galicia. Underground reviews at the time praised the band’s sincerity and their ability to merge traditional instrumentation with metal without losing energy or cohesion. The album circulated widely in the Spanish underground and helped establish Iria Flavia as a notable regional act.
After several lineup changes and periods of inactivity, the band reâemerged with renewed strength, eventually releasing the selfâtitled EP Iria Flavia in 2015. This later material reflected a more polished and modern approach while preserving their folkâmetal identity. The EP highlighted tighter songwriting, clearer production, and a matured melodic direction, reaffirming their place within the Galician metal scene.
Throughout their history, Iria Flavia has been defined by the longâstanding partnership between vocalist/guitarist JosĂ© A. MĂ©ndez “Cana” and bassist Luis Ălvarez GarcĂa, both of whom have anchored the band since its inception. Their persistence has allowed the project to survive multiple hiatuses and lineup shifts, maintaining a loyal local following and a reputation for heartfelt, melodic, and culturally rooted metal.
