ĂŤsfjall was founded in 2019 in Girona, Catalonia, as an instrumental atmospheric black metal and ambient project centered entirely around the creative vision of Taiga. The name—meaning ice mountain in Icelandic—captures the project’s defining aesthetic: vast, frozen soundscapes, glacial ambience, and a sense of solitude shaped by nature’s harsh immensity. From the beginning, ĂŤsfjall embraced a prolific, exploratory approach, releasing multiple works per year and cultivating a sound that moves fluidly between depressive atmospheres, cosmic ambience, and raw, minimalistic black metal textures.

The project’s debut year alone produced Frozen Landscape, Endalaus vetrar nĂłtt, and the EP Tales from the Remains, establishing ĂŤsfjall’s signature blend of cold melodic drift, hypnotic repetition, and immersive ambient passages. These early releases were noted in underground circles for their ability to evoke isolation, winter desolation, and the quiet violence of natural environments without relying on vocals or traditional song structures.

Between 2020 and 2022, ĂŤsfjall entered its most productive phase, releasing albums such as A Fleeting Vision of Hope, Icebound Debris, Ilene os, And I’ll Worship Your Blue Light, and Cryophilic Blackness Increase. Each work explored a different facet of the project’s sonic identity—ranging from cosmic ambient meditations to harsher, frostbitten black metal surges. Thematically, the music shifted from earthly winter landscapes to existential awe, cosmic dread, and abstract emotional states, all conveyed through instrumental storytelling.

Singles like Ядерна зима and I Find Myself in Awe at the Dreadful Beauty of the Cosmos expanded ĂŤsfjall’s palette into post‑apocalyptic and cosmic territories, while later EPs such as Gentle Wintry Moods, Insane Ramblings of a Hypothermiac, and Makaber Boreal Skjønnhet showcased Taiga’s ability to merge ambient minimalism with raw atmospheric black metal in increasingly experimental ways.

By 2024, with the release of Where Life Goes to Die, New Forms Rise in Its Wake, the project had solidified its reputation as one of the most prolific and distinctive instrumental atmospheric black metal entities in the Spanish underground. Although currently on hold, ĂŤsfjall’s extensive discography stands as a testament to Taiga’s relentless creativity and his commitment to crafting immersive, emotionally charged winter soundscapes.
