Kaatarakt was a Geneva‑based melodic death/folk metal band active between 2014 and 2020, known for blending Scandinavian‑influenced melodic death metal with pagan and Viking‑themed folk elements. Emerging during a period of renewed interest in folk‑infused extreme metal, the band quickly gained attention in the Swiss underground thanks to their energetic live presence and their ability to merge heavy riffing with atmospheric, tradition‑inspired melodies.
Their debut EP Follow the Raven (2016) introduced the core of their sound: sharp, melodic guitar lines, driving rhythmic structures, and a vocal approach rooted in harsh, commanding growls. The EP was well‑received in local scenes, praised for its balance between aggression and folk‑tinged atmospheres. Thematically, the band drew heavily from pagan spirituality, ancestral memory, and mythological storytelling, grounding their music in a sense of cultural and historical identity.
With Echoes of the Past (2018), Kaatarakt expanded their musical palette, incorporating more intricate guitar harmonies and a stronger folk presence through keyboards and melodic layering. Reviews from underground zines highlighted the EP’s improved production, tighter songwriting, and its evocative, battle‑driven tone. The involvement of musicians connected to notable Swiss acts such as Cân Bardd, Kassogtha, and Deus Ex Machina further strengthened the band’s reputation within the regional extreme metal community.
Despite their growing momentum, internal changes and members’ commitments to other projects eventually led to the band’s dissolution around 2020. Nevertheless, Kaatarakt left behind a compact but respected discography that continues to resonate with fans of melodic pagan metal. Their music remains a testament to the vitality of the Swiss folk‑influenced extreme metal scene during the 2010s.
