Keep of Kalessin formed in Trondheim in 1995 after an earlier incarnation as Ildskjaer, rising quickly as one of Norway’s most distinctive black metal forces. Their early work, culminating in Through Times of War (1997) and Agnen – A Journey Through the Dark (1999), forged a harsh, fast, and atmospheric style rooted in the fantasy world of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea—from which the band took both its name and much of its lyrical imagery. These albums established their reputation for technical precision, sweeping melodies, and a sense of epic scale uncommon in the Norwegian scene of the time.
After a brief hiatus, the band returned with the Reclaim EP in 2003, marking the beginning of a new era defined by a more melodic, expansive, and battle‑driven sound. This evolution reached full force on Armada (2006) and Kolossus (2008), albums that blended black metal ferocity with death‑metal weight, grandiose arrangements, and a sharpened sense of narrative drama. Their 2010 release Reptilian pushed this hybrid even further, embracing a more anthemic and triumphant tone while retaining the darkness at the project’s core.
Internal tensions surfaced in 2013 with the departure of vocalist Thebon, whose exit was marked by conflicting public statements from both sides. Guitarist and founder Obsidian C. assumed vocal duties thereafter, reinforcing his role as the band’s central creative force and guiding Keep of Kalessin into a more streamlined and self‑contained formation.
Later works such as Epistemology (2015) and Katharsis (2023) continued to refine their blend of melodic black/death metal, emphasizing clarity, technicality, and a grand, almost mythic sense of scale. Across decades of activity, the band has remained committed to themes of fantasy, war, and darkness, drawing heavily from the Earthsea mythos while forging a sound that is unmistakably their own. Still active and aligned with Season of Mist, Keep of Kalessin stand as one of Norway’s most enduring and forward‑driven extreme metal acts, continually expanding the boundaries of epic black metal.
The name Keep of Kalessin comes from Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy. The island home is named for its occupant, Earthsea's eldest and most feared dragon Kalessin. It is "an island like a tower. Its cliffs were black and made up of many cylinders or great pillars pressed together, with straight edges and plane surfaces, rising three hundred feet sheer from the water". Many of the band's lyrics reference this book series.
These are Keep of Kalessin's and Thebon's official statements on his departure from the band in 2013:
Keep of Kalessin:
"We haven't heard from [Thebon] in 5 months. He went to South Africa with his girlfriend and we received no life sign or answers to our messages. Instead of waiting it out we just had to move on and I started testing the vocals in the studio myself, realizing my vocals were far from bad. I've always been the driving force of the band and I found it to be easier if I just managed to handle the vocals from now on instead of replacing Thebon with someone else. The worst part of this will of course be to do both vocals and guitars live, but it's all a matter of practice, really. We now feel that this is the way to go and that the band is in fact stronger than ever!"
Thebon:
"I'm not missing in the jungle, I went to study and relax for three months and did not hear anything from the band in that time. I got a message about a band meeting a week ago but didn't reply because I was preoccupied with other projects, and I was deciding if I wanted to continue with KOK. Today I read in a press release that they have recorded new music, and even made a video, and fired me in public at the Inferno Festival. Clearly, this proves that they have made their decision about me quite some time ago. This kind of loyalty and friendship is exactly one of the reasons I have been considering leaving the band for quite some time now. I wish them all the best."
