Кобь (Kob’) is an atmospheric black metal and dark ambient project from Yekaterinburg, rooted deeply in Ural folklore, shamanic mysticism, and the ancient spirit of the region’s forests. The project began in 1999 under the name Виднокраи, founded by A Foggy One and Ural, who recorded the demo Пѣпелъ старины (“Ashes of Ages”) that same year. This early incarnation already displayed the duo’s fascination with archaic language, forgotten traditions, and the mythic landscapes of the Ural Mountains.
In 2002, the project was reborn as Кобь, a name meaning “Sorcery,” marking the beginning of its fully developed artistic identity. The band describes its style as “Ural Shamanic Black Ambient”, a blend of atmospheric black metal, ritual ambient, and ancient Uralian cultural motifs. All lyrics are written in a reconstructed Old Uralian dialect of Russian, giving the music a unique linguistic and historical depth rarely found in the genre.
The first demo under the new name, Дрѣвочащь покровъ (“Shroud of Woods”), was recorded in autumn 2004. Its three tracks focused on the wisdom of ancient pra‑Ural shamans, combining raw black metal elements with meditative ambient passages and ritualistic vocal delivery. This release established the project’s signature atmosphere: cold, forest‑bound, and steeped in ancestral memory.
Кобь’s defining work arrived in 2006 with the full‑length Давьныѣ покровы рипѣискыихъ дрѣвочащь (“The Ancient Shroud of Primeval Ural Woods”). The album expanded the project’s sonic and conceptual scope, weaving together hypnotic tremolo riffs, deep ambient layers, and lyrical themes centered on Ural legends, sacred groves, and the spiritual presence of the land. The record is often regarded as a cult classic within the Russian atmospheric black metal underground for its authenticity and its immersive, ritualistic aura.
After a long period of silence, Кобь returned in 2019 with the EP The Breath of the Chthonic Depths / Въздохъ земныих глубин, a work that delved deeper into subterranean myth, chthonic forces, and the primordial energies of the earth. The release reaffirmed the project’s commitment to its shamanic and nature‑bound identity while presenting a more refined and mature sound.
Across its entire existence, Кобь has remained a duo, with Ural handling guitars, bass, and programming, and A Foggy One providing vocals. Their music stands as a rare example of regional black metal that is not only atmospheric but also ethnographically and linguistically rooted, preserving fragments of ancient Ural culture through sound.
