KylmĂ€ânamed after the Finnish word for “cold”âwas born in Barcelona in 2009 as a hybrid metal project unafraid to cross boundaries. Their sound has always been defined by contrast: the icy atmospheres of Scandinavian melodic death metal, the emotional sweep of symphonic arrangements, the earthy pulse of folk elements, and the sharp, modern punch of metalcore. Rather than settling into a single identity, KylmĂ€ has evolved through phases, hiatuses, and rebirths, each time returning with a clearer sense of purpose.
The band’s earliest material, including their participation in Flames Fest Edition 1 (2013) and the Envy demo/EP (2014), showcased a young group experimenting with melody, aggression, and cinematic textures. Harsh vocals collided with soaring guitar leads, while keyboards and folkâtinged motifs added atmosphere. These early releases earned them attention within the Catalan underground for their ambition and stylistic breadth.
After a period of inactivity, KylmĂ€ resurfaced with renewed energy, culminating in the 2019 EP Primal Duality. This release marked a turning point: tighter songwriting, heavier production, and a more cohesive fusion of their influences. The EP balanced melodic death metal’s emotional intensity with metalcore’s rhythmic precision, while still leaving space for symphonic and folk flourishes. It signaled the band’s full return and laid the groundwork for their current era.
KylmĂ€’s identity is shaped by longâstanding members who have carried the project through its various incarnations. Guitarist IvĂĄn FerrĂșsâalso known for his work in Perennial Isolationâbrings atmospheric sensibilities that enrich the band’s melodic core. Vocalist Javi JimĂ©nez anchors the sound with a versatile, emotive delivery, while the rhythm section provides the weight and drive that allow the band to shift fluidly between genres.
Today, KylmÀ stands as a uniquely hybrid force in the Catalan scene: melodic yet heavy, atmospheric yet direct, rooted in cold northern influences but unmistakably shaped by their Mediterranean environment.
