MROH is a modern atmospheric black metal project active since 2019, distinguished by its polished production, melodic sensibility, and a dramatic, emotionally charged approach that sets it apart from the rawer traditions of the genre. Although the band maintains a relatively low public profile, its rapid and prolific output has made it a recognizable name within the contemporary Russian atmospheric scene.

The project’s debut full‑length, The Story (2020), introduced MROH’s core aesthetic: sweeping guitar melodies, dense atmospheric layering, and a vocal delivery that shifts between anguished intensity and solemn narration. The album blends traditional atmospheric black metal elements with a more accessible, almost cinematic structure, earning attention for its clarity and emotional immediacy. Later that same year, the EP Unpublished and the single Truth expanded the project’s sonic palette, experimenting with softer passages, melodic interludes, and a more introspective tone.

In 2021, MROH re‑released The Story in a refined edition and followed it with the full‑length XII, a darker and more ambitious work. XII deepened the band’s thematic focus, weaving together motifs of inner struggle, revelation, and existential searching. The album’s production is notably clean for the genre, allowing the interplay between guitars and atmospheric textures to stand out. The single Revelation, released the same year, further showcased the band’s ability to balance aggression with emotional depth.

MROH’s collaborative works—Wounded Souls and Sowers of Tares (both 2022)—highlight the project’s willingness to explore beyond strict genre boundaries. These releases incorporate elements of post‑metal, ambient, and melodic black metal, emphasizing mood and narrative over traditional structures. The collaborations also underline the band members’ connections to other projects within the Russian underground, particularly the atmospheric collective surrounding Дрема.

After a brief period of silence, MROH returned in 2024 with the single Alone and its instrumental counterpart. These tracks present a more refined, melancholic direction, focusing on emotional clarity and melodic progression. The instrumental version emphasizes the project’s strong compositional foundation, revealing the atmospheric depth beneath the vocals.

MROH’s lineup—Batogar, Silver, and Vlamroh—brings together musicians with extensive experience in atmospheric and melodic black metal, contributing to the project’s cohesive yet evolving sound. Their combined backgrounds in projects such as Ashes of Dagoth, Дрема, Empiric, Moonforest, and Stilverlight enrich MROH’s musical identity, grounding it firmly within the modern Russian atmospheric tradition while allowing room for experimentation.
