Maleficio, formed in Ciudad Real in 1994, was one of the earliest Spanish bands to embrace a raw, ritualistic form of symphonic black metal. Their name—translating to “witchcraft” or “hex”—perfectly captures the band’s aesthetic: occult, abrasive, and steeped in anti‑cosmic and blasphemous themes. Emerging during a period when the Spanish extreme‑metal underground was still taking shape, Maleficio carved out a niche with their harsh, keyboard‑laden sound and their uncompromising ideological stance.

Their first known recording, Demo 1997, introduced a primitive but atmospheric approach: cold riffs, piercing keyboards, and vocals drenched in venom. This foundation evolved through Codex Prohibitio (2000) and PatĂbulo de obediencia (2001), where the band leaned further into ritualistic structures and a more defined symphonic edge. Their final demo, Those Someday I Met (2003), showed a darker, more mature sound, with a clearer balance between aggression and atmosphere.

Maleficio also appeared on the Atlantida Vol. 14 compilation in 2002 with the track “En la destruction creemos,” a piece that encapsulated their anti‑cosmic, destructive ethos. Despite their underground status and limited discography, the band remains a notable reference within the early Spanish symphonic black metal scene—raw, unfiltered, and ideologically extreme.

The band dissolved in 2004, leaving behind a small but potent legacy of demos that reflect the harsh, occult‑driven spirit of late‑90s Iberian black metal.
