Melancholy

Origin: Lithuania
Formed: 2025
Status: Active
Genre: Depressive Black Metal
Label: Independent
Themes: Existential crisis, Depression

Melancholy emerged in Utena in 2025 as a depressive black metal project shaped by stark emotional intensity and a distinctly lo‑fi, isolationist aesthetic. Their music is rooted in the bleakest traditions of DSBM—minimalist structures, repetitive riffs, anguished vocals, and an atmosphere steeped in existential dread. The project quickly gained underground visibility through its raw output and participation in the Terror Upon The Scum compilation, where the track “Hallucination” introduced their suffocating, hallucinatory sound. Their debut demo Existential Tragedy (2025) was recorded throughout March and April in Utena and released digitally. It presents a series of fragmented, depressive compositions framed by an intro and outro, capturing the project’s early identity—unpolished, emotionally direct, and intentionally claustrophobic. melancholy4.bandcamp.com The demo’s hypnotic repetition and dissonant layering established Melancholy as a promising new force within Lithuania’s DSBM underground.

The project continued its rapid output with the singles Then You Die and Instrumental Hallucination (2025), each expanding on the project’s themes of existential collapse and psychological disintegration. Their 2025 EP Ideas Drowned in Static Noise marked a significant step forward, with denser arrangements and a more immersive, suffocating production approach. The EP’s title reflects its sonic character—drowned, distorted, and overwhelmed by emotional noise. Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives

Melancholy is driven by two musicians deeply embedded in the Lithuanian underground. Rokas, known from Septileptic and formerly DarkneSS, Harmmageddon, and LxIxCxEx, provides bass, guitars, and drum programming, shaping the project’s bleak instrumental foundation. Schizoterapeutas (Dovydas), also of Septileptic, contributes guitars, vocals, and additional programming, bringing a raw, expressive edge to the project’s sound. Their combined experience in raw black metal and depressive soundscapes gives Melancholy its distinctive emotional weight. dev.metal-archives.com

Despite its young age, Melancholy has already carved out a recognizable identity—harsh, introspective, and uncompromisingly bleak—positioning itself as one of the more active new voices in Lithuania’s depressive black metal scene.
