Naglfar formed in Bergen in 1993 as a heavy metal band with a faint atmospheric black‑metal edge, though the members consistently rejected any association with the black metal scene. Their identity instead centered on Norse mythology—particularly the apocalyptic image of Naglfar, the ship built from the nails of the dead that sails at Ragnarök. This mythic anchor shaped both their name and the thematic tone of their early recordings, which blended traditional heavy‑metal structures with a colder, more atmospheric sensibility.
The band’s first stable lineup coalesced around drummer Truls Eriksen and guitarist Bjørnar NygĂĄrd, later joined by bassist and vocalist Rolf Edwardsen. Early material, including the Demo ’94 (later paired with In Gowns Flowing Wide on a split) and the 1995 Naglfar demo, captured a raw but melodic sound marked by heavy‑metal riffing, mythological references, and a subtle northern darkness. After a brief hiatus, the group resurfaced with two 1999 rehearsal tapes—Rehearsal and Mjøden flyter atter—which preserved their evolving style in unpolished form.
By the early 2000s, Naglfar shifted toward a more traditional heavy‑metal expression, releasing the singles Fat Old Heavy Metal Mama and Born to Return in 2002, works that emphasized their distance from black metal and their commitment to a more classic, riff‑driven approach. Though the band eventually dissolved, their sporadic activity extended into the following decades, culminating in the announcement of a 2025 split release, Demo ’94 / In Gowns Flowing Wide, which recontextualizes their earliest material.
Naglfar remains a curious and singular presence in the Norwegian underground: a band rooted in Norse myth and atmospheric heaviness, yet deliberately positioned outside the black‑metal movement that surrounded them, leaving behind a small but distinctive body of work shaped by mythic imagery and traditional metal spirit.
Naglfar is, according to the Prose Edda, a ship made up of the nails of the dead (which is is also the etymological meaning of its name) which would be put at sea at Ragnarök.
Their music has a slight black metal aesthetic, but the band vehemently denies any connection to that scene.
