Ned is a sludge/stoner metal band from Jackson, Kentucky, formed in 2014 and rooted deeply in Appalachian culture, rural humor, and the heavy, fuzz‑drenched aesthetics of American stoner rock. Emerging from a small but vibrant local scene, Ned quickly developed a reputation for their unpolished, high‑energy sound—equal parts swampy sludge, blues‑infused riffing, and tongue‑in‑cheek stoner metal attitude. Their music often celebrates the wildness of Appalachian life, the haze of weed culture, and the raw spirit of backwoods metal.
The band’s debut demo Ned Zeppelin (2014) introduced their irreverent personality and thick, riff‑heavy approach. It was followed by the full‑length Burnout (2015), a record that leaned heavily into groovy stoner riffs, distorted bass, and a loose, jam‑oriented structure. The album helped Ned gain underground attention, particularly among fans of DIY sludge and stoner rock.
Their self‑titled album Ned (2017) marked a turning point, presenting a more cohesive sound while retaining the band’s trademark humor and heaviness. The record blended bluesy swagger with thick, down‑tuned riffs and a distinctly Appalachian flavor, solidifying Ned’s identity as a regional cult act.
In 2020, the band released Electric Sex, a fuzz‑soaked, psychedelic‑leaning album that expanded their sonic palette with more melodic passages and a stronger rock influence. This was followed by Special Ned (2021), a playful yet musically tight release that continued to refine their blend of sludge, stoner metal, and blues‑rock.
Ned’s breakthrough in the underground came with Bong (2023), the album that secured their acceptance into the Metal Archives. Bong is a celebration of everything the band represents: thick riffs, weed‑worshipping themes, Appalachian grit, and a raw, unfiltered sense of fun. The record resonated strongly with stoner metal fans and became their most widely circulated release.
The momentum continued with Blazing Ned (2024), a heavier and more aggressive album that pushed deeper into sludge territory while maintaining the band’s signature groove. Their upcoming album Otel (2025) is expected to continue this evolution, blending heavier tones with the band’s characteristic humor and regional identity.
Ned’s music is defined by its authenticity—unpretentious, loud, and rooted in the culture of rural Kentucky. Their sound bridges the gap between stoner metal’s psychedelic haze and sludge’s gritty heaviness, all delivered with a distinctly Appalachian twist. Despite lineup changes and the tragic passing of drummer Stevie Ray Watkins in 2025, the band remains active and committed to their unique brand of wild, weed‑soaked metal.
