Nocra is an atmospheric black metal project from Saint Petersburg, active since 2008 and built around the creative partnership of Lady S and Tesana. From its earliest recordings, Nocra has cultivated a sound rooted in sorrow, introspection, and cold melodic atmospheres, drawing from the depressive and atmospheric black metal traditions while maintaining a distinctly personal voice. The band’s music is characterized by mournful tremolo lines, melancholic keyboard textures, and a raw emotional delivery that reflects the bleakness and solitude often associated with the Russian scene.
The project debuted in 2009 with a self‑titled demo, quickly followed by the full‑length Enlightened by Death the same year. These early works established Nocra’s core aesthetic: lo‑fi production, sorrow‑laden melodies, and a focus on emotional expression over technicality. The band’s early material resonated with underground listeners for its sincerity and its ability to evoke a sense of desolation without relying on excessive aggression.
In 2010, Nocra participated in the split Four Ways of Darkness, further expanding its presence in the atmospheric black metal underground. The following year saw the release of The Haunting (2011), a more mature and cohesive album that deepened the project’s exploration of grief, longing, and spectral melancholy. The record blended atmospheric black metal with subtle ambient elements, creating a haunting, dreamlike soundscape.
The 2013 split Demonocrass continued Nocra’s collaborative trajectory, pairing the band with other underground acts and showcasing a darker, more oppressive tone. In 2015, Nocra released Seven Reasons to Die, a full‑length that stands as one of the project’s most emotionally intense works. The album’s themes revolve around despair, inner collapse, and the weight of sorrow, supported by a more refined production and stronger compositional structure.
After several years of silence, Nocra returned in 2022 with the single The Groke (Mörkö), a track that introduced a colder, more atmospheric direction while retaining the project’s signature emotional depth. The single demonstrated that Nocra remains committed to its core themes while continuing to evolve sonically.
Throughout its existence, Nocra has remained a deeply personal project. Lady S, responsible for guitars, bass, keyboards, and vocals, shapes the band’s melodic and emotional identity, while Tesana provides the rhythmic backbone with steady, expressive drumming. Their long‑standing collaboration has given Nocra a sense of continuity and authenticity that resonates strongly within the Russian atmospheric black metal community.
Nocra’s music is defined by sorrow, introspection, and a haunting sense of emotional weight—qualities that have earned the project a quiet but enduring place in the underground. Their contribution to the compilation Jericho Vol. 46 – Blood on Snow (2019) with the track “In My Dreams” further cemented their presence in the scene.
