Northland is one of the most important and enduring folk/melodic death metal bands in Spain. Founded in Barcelona in 2004, the band blends Scandinavian‑influenced melodic death metal with Celtic and pagan folk elements, creating a sound that is both epic and emotionally charged. Their music is defined by soaring violin lines, triumphant melodies, and a strong sense of narrative rooted in nature, myth, and battle.
After a brief early formation in 2004, Northland reactivated in 2007 with a more stable lineup and quickly gained attention through their demos Freezing Sadness (2007, 2008) and Immortal Forest Song (2008). These recordings established their signature blend of folk instrumentation, harsh vocals, and melodic riffing.
Their self‑titled debut full‑length Northland (2010) became a landmark release in the Spanish folk‑metal scene, praised for its energy, memorable melodies, and emotional depth. Five years later, the band released Downfall and Rebirth (2015), a more mature and cinematic work that expanded their sound with richer arrangements and a stronger conceptual arc.
Northland’s lineup has evolved significantly over the years, with many musicians from the Catalan folk‑metal and melodic death scenes contributing to the band’s identity. Their current formation is one of their strongest, featuring members with ties to Drakum, Atrexial, Moonrise, and other notable Spanish acts.
Despite lineup changes and long intervals between releases, Northland remains active, respected, and influential—one of the defining names in Iberian folk/melodic death metal.
