Old Man of the Desert is an instrumental atmospheric black metal/ambient project founded in 2013 in Khimki, Moscow Oblast. The project is the solitary creation of S.A., a multi‑instrumentalist also known for his work in Decadent Decay, Dream Addict, and Violescent. From the beginning, Old Man of the Desert has embraced a quiet, introspective aesthetic—windswept ambience, minimalistic black metal textures, and a strong sense of natural solitude.

The project’s early period (2013–2016) was marked by a flurry of demos and small releases, each one refining its blend of atmospheric black metal and meditative ambient soundscapes. The debut demo MMXIII (2013) introduced the project’s core identity: raw, instrumental compositions built on drifting tremolo lines, soft ambient layers, and a sense of wandering through vast, uninhabited landscapes.

In 2014, Old Man of the Desert released two more demos—Tales of Northern Woods and an untitled demo—along with the split Spirits of Woods. These works deepened the project’s connection to nature‑oriented black metal, evoking imagery of forests, wind, and the quiet presence of the natural world. The music remained entirely instrumental, relying on atmosphere and texture rather than vocals or narrative.

The 2015 demo MMXV and the split with Third Reich Satan’s Throne continued this trajectory, while the Untitled Compilation (2015) gathered earlier material into a cohesive document of the project’s formative years. In 2016, the EP Reversal marked the end of the first era of activity—a more polished and emotionally resonant release that hinted at a growing ambient influence.

After a three‑year silence, Old Man of the Desert returned in 2019 and resumed activity, culminating in the 2020 EP Revenant. This release reaffirmed the project’s commitment to instrumental atmospheric black metal, blending cold, melancholic melodies with expansive ambient passages. Revenant feels like a rebirth—appropriately named—showing a more mature and refined approach while preserving the project’s solitary, nature‑bound spirit.

Old Man of the Desert remains active, continuing to craft music that sits at the intersection of atmospheric black metal, ambient minimalism, and natural mysticism. Its instrumental nature gives the project a meditative quality, inviting listeners into a quiet, windswept world shaped entirely by S.A.’s vision.
