Pimeä Metsä was a Viking/folk metal band from Madrid, active between 2006 and 2018. Their name, taken from Finnish and meaning “dark forest,” reflected the band’s fascination with northern landscapes, mythology, and epic storytelling. Over the years they became one of Spain’s most recognizable Viking metal acts, known for combining melodic folk passages with powerful riffing, battle‑driven choruses, and a strong narrative focus rooted in Norse lore.
The band’s early years were marked by a growing presence in the Spanish underground scene, culminating in the release of their debut EP Beneath the Northern Lights (2010). The EP introduced their characteristic blend of harsh vocals, melodic guitar lines, and folk‑inspired arrangements, earning them attention from fans of both Viking and melodic death metal.
Their first full‑length album, Legacy of the Heathen North (2013), expanded their sound with more ambitious songwriting and a clearer production. The album was well received in underground circles for its epic atmosphere and its ability to evoke northern sagas through dynamic compositions. Pimeä Metsä continued to refine their style on No Blood, No Glory (2016), a record that showcased heavier riffing, more aggressive vocals, and a stronger emphasis on battle‑themed narratives. This album helped solidify their reputation beyond Spain, leading to features in international metal magazines and compilation appearances, including Fear Candy 166 from Terrorizer Magazine in 2017 with the track “Einherjer.”
Throughout their career, the band performed extensively across Spain, sharing stages with various folk, pagan, and extreme metal acts. Their shows were known for their energetic delivery and thematic immersion, often incorporating Viking aesthetics and storytelling elements.
Despite their growing recognition, Pimeä Metsä disbanded in 2018, leaving behind a concise but influential discography within the Spanish Viking/folk metal scene. Their work remains appreciated for its sincerity, melodic strength, and dedication to northern mythological themes.
