Pseudodementia is an obscure Russian atmospheric black metal/ambient project shrouded in anonymity, operating somewhere within the depressive and misanthropic wing of the underground. The project’s name—referring to a psychiatric condition in which severe depression mimics dementia—captures its aesthetic perfectly: blurred consciousness, emotional disintegration, and a sense of drifting through mental fog.
Musically, Pseudodementia blends raw atmospheric black metal with dark ambient textures, creating a sound that feels claustrophobic, unstable, and psychologically frayed. The project’s releases are sparse but thematically unified, each one circling around madness, emotional collapse, and the dissolution of identity. The production is intentionally lo‑fi and distant, reinforcing the sense of mental distortion and internal decay.
The project debuted with the demo Suspense (2013), a raw and minimalistic introduction built on eerie ambience and fragmented black metal structures. This was followed by the full‑length For the Repose (2014), the project’s most substantial work—an immersive descent into misanthropy and psychological ruin. The album’s atmosphere is bleak and suffocating, with long, drifting passages that evoke a mind unraveling.
In 2015, Pseudodementia released the EP Aerim, a shorter but more focused exploration of ambient‑driven melancholy. After several years of silence, the project resurfaced with Замело (2019), an EP whose title translates roughly to “Snowed In” or “Buried by Snow”—a fitting metaphor for emotional paralysis and isolation.
Little is known about the musicians behind the project. Carol Rude and Berzelius are credited with unspecified roles, maintaining the project’s aura of anonymity. Berzelius is also associated with Stumpwatersalad, another obscure underground act.
Pseudodementia remains active but silent, its presence defined by absence—sporadic releases, no public statements, and a sound rooted in psychological erosion and atmospheric decay.
