Requiem Laus stands as one of the longest‑running and most emblematic extreme‑metal acts from Madeira, tracing its origins back to 1989 under the name Morbidatory. Founded by Miguel Freitas, Marco Azevedo, Carlos Abreu, and Nuno BrazĂŁo (RIP), the group evolved into Requiem in 1992 and finally adopted the name Requiem Laus—“Praised Rest”—as their identity solidified. From the beginning, the band pursued a hybrid of melodic death and black metal, marked by emotional intensity, dramatic riffing, and a distinctly Portuguese sense of melancholy.
Across the 1990s, Requiem Laus became a central force in the Portuguese underground. Early demos such as Life Fading Existence (1994) and For the Ones Who Died (1996) established their reputation, combining harsh vocals, melodic guitar lines, and atmospheric passages that set them apart from contemporaries. By the late ’90s, the lineup stabilized around Miguel Freitas, Dani Pereira, and Ricardo Fernandes, forming the creative core that continues to define the band.
Their sound matured through the 2000s, culminating in the full‑length albums The Eternal Plague (2008) and As Long as Darkness Bleeds (2011). These works expanded their melodic sensibilities while retaining the aggression and emotional weight that characterized their early material. The band’s EPs—Impulse (2012), A Higher Claim (2016), Last Winter (2017), Hate & Despair (2017), and The Future (2019)—showcase a group continually refining its craft, balancing sorrowful atmospheres with sharp, driving riffs.
Requiem Laus has seen numerous lineup changes, especially among drummers and bassists, but Miguel Freitas has remained the guiding force since the beginning, shaping the band’s direction through every era. Long‑time members Dani Pereira (guitars) and Ricardo Fernandes (bass) have provided stability since 1997, while Pedro Pereira joined on keyboards in 2016, adding a renewed atmospheric dimension.
More than three decades after its inception, Requiem Laus remains active and influential, carrying forward the legacy of Madeira’s extreme‑metal scene. Their discography reflects persistence, evolution, and a commitment to melodic extremity that has earned them a lasting place in Portuguese metal history.
