Runic is one of the most distinctive pagan/folk metal bands to emerge from Spain in the early 2000s. Formed in CastellĂłn de la Plana, they forged a sound they proudly labeled “barbaric pagan metal”—a blend of melodic death metal riffing, folk instrumentation, epic atmospheres, and lyrical themes rooted in ancient cultures, mythic warfare, and pre‑Christian spirituality. Their music stands out for its raw energy, martial rhythms, and a strong sense of narrative, evoking tribal rites, ancestral memory, and the brutality of ancient battles.
Their debut EP Awaiting the Sound of the Unavoidable (2001) introduced this identity with surprising maturity: harsh vocals, melodic yet forceful guitars, and atmospheric keyboards that hinted at the epic direction they would later embrace. The EP earned them early underground recognition and led to compilation appearances across Europe, including Atlantida Vol. 13 (2002).
Runic reached their creative peak with the full‑length Liar Flags (2006), released through Massacre Records. The album is widely regarded as one of the strongest pagan metal releases ever produced in Spain. It combined aggressive riffing with folk‑driven melodies, bagpipes, and keyboards, delivering a sound both ferocious and evocative. Tracks like “Liar Flags,” “Ambush,” and “When the Demons Ride” gained international attention, appearing on samplers from Metal Hammer and HammerWorld. The album’s themes—betrayal, war, tribal honor—were expressed through powerful arrangements and a uniquely Iberian sense of identity.
Despite their rising profile, the band went on hiatus in 2009. They resurfaced in 2012, but activity since then has been sporadic, leaving their current status officially on hold. Still, Runic’s legacy remains intact: a cult band whose single full‑length continues to be celebrated for its originality and intensity within the pagan/folk metal scene.
