NordLoth is an atmospheric black metal project from Novocherkassk, originally founded in 2015 under the name Shadow of NordLoth before adopting its current form in 2020. The project is the creation of a single multi‑instrumentalist—NordLoth himself—who composes, performs, and produces all material. His work blends melancholic black metal with ambient textures, folk‑tinged melodies, and a strong sense of solitude, often drawing on northern imagery, winter landscapes, and introspective emotional states.
The early era (2015–2020) under the Shadow of NordLoth name established the project’s foundations: raw, atmospheric production, melodic tremolo lines, and a focus on mood over aggression. Early singles such as I Still Feel Your Hand Inside Mine (2015) and Heaven Falls (2016), along with the Iridal EP (2016), introduced a sound that was both mournful and expansive. These works circulated quietly in the underground, gaining attention for their sincerity and the project’s distinctive melodic sensibility.
With the transition to NordLoth in 2020, the project’s identity became more defined. Singles like Winter Is Coming and To North showcased a colder, more polished approach, while still retaining the emotional vulnerability of earlier material. The project’s Bandcamp presence expanded significantly, with a steady stream of singles, covers, and EPs that demonstrated both stylistic consistency and a willingness to experiment with folk elements, Scandinavian‑influenced melodies, and atmospheric layering.
The Forest EP (2021) marked a turning point, receiving positive underground reception for its immersive soundscapes and refined songwriting. Subsequent releases—including The Night (2023) and singles such as Vi har inte dött, Å regjere i skogene våre, and Панихида ветра—showcase NordLoth’s evolution toward a more cinematic, nature‑driven form of atmospheric black metal. These works emphasize vast, echoing guitar lines, distant vocals, and a sense of wandering through desolate forests or forgotten northern realms.
Despite remaining fully independent, NordLoth has built a dedicated following through consistent output and a deeply personal aesthetic. The project stands as a notable voice in the modern Russian atmospheric black metal scene, balancing raw emotion with melodic clarity and a strong sense of place.
